Giving Back to Nature: My Volunteering Experience at St Aidens RSPB –
Liz Sunley Operations Manager Ripon House
Last week, our full staff team came together for an away day at the Metropole Hotel in Leeds, a valuable opportunity to step back from our daily roles, reconnect as a team, and reflect on what each of us brings to our organisation.
Facilitated by Growthwell, the day centred on a simple but powerful idea: every individual contributes something unique, and it’s the combination of these differences that makes us stronger.
Understanding Our Individual Strengths
One of the highlights of the day was an engaging exercise where we explored our individual strengths by linking them to parts of the body. Some examples were:
- The Head – representing thinking, problem-solving and strategic insight
- The Heart – symbolising empathy, compassion and emotional connection
- The Skin – reflecting protection, boundaries and awareness of our environment
- The Feet – grounding us in action, reliability and moving things forward
This creative approach helped us recognise how diverse skills and perspectives come together to form a cohesive and effective team. It reinforced that no single role is more important than another, each function is essential to the whole.
The Power of Appreciation
We ended the reflective part of the day with a meaningful activity: writing gratitude notes to one another.
Each team member received messages from colleagues highlighting how they are seen, valued and appreciated. It was a powerful moment, a reminder that the small, everyday things we do often have a bigger impact than we realise.
Creating space for recognition like this strengthens relationships and builds a positive, supportive culture.
Ending on a High
To round off the day, we shifted gears and embraced some well-deserved fun with an activity hosted by Red Cactus. The “Big Quiz” brought out everyone’s competitive spirit, with plenty of laughter along the way.
It was the perfect way to celebrate the day, reinforcing not just our teamwork, but the importance of enjoying time together.
Moving Forward
The away day was a chance to reconnect with our shared values, celebrate individuality, and strengthen our sense of team. We left feeling re-energised, appreciated, and proud of the collective impact we make.
A huge thank you to the team who brought their whole selves to the day, to Growthwell for facilitating such a meaningful day, and to Red Cactus for bringing the fun!
And a massive congratulations to the winning quiz team!

I’ve enjoyed working at Progress to Change since 2011. As a CIMA qualified accountant, my role as Finance Manager includes ensuring that our funding and budgeting across both premises is managed effectively, to ensure we provide best use of all the resources available to us. I enjoy a varied role, working as part of the team in the office as well as interacting with numerous contractors, Trustees and colleagues.
I joined Progress to Change in January 2016, initially serving as the Operational Manager at Cardigan House. In April 2022, I transitioned to Ripon House as the Operational Lead, before stepping into my current role as CEO in April 2024.
I joined Progress to Change as operations manager at Cardigan House in March 2022. Prior to joining Progress to Change I qualified as a Probation Officer in 2004, completing a BA degree in Probation Studies to do so. I worked for the Probation Service for 18 years in a variety of frontline settings and I had also previously worked at Cardigan House on a relief basis so I already had a good knowledge of the building and many of the processes.
Alastair joined the charity as a trustee in September 2017 and in September 2022 was elected as its chair.
Prior to joining Progress to Change, I worked across the voluntary sector, NHS and
