Ripon House Open Day Showcases the Power of Support, Hope and Opportunity

On Weds 30th September, Ripon House was delighted to welcome a wide range of guests to our annual Open Day, providing an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable work taking place within Approved Premises and the positive outcomes being achieved by women rebuilding their lives after prison.

We were honoured to be joined by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Stephen Holroyd alongside partner agencies and organisations including Smart Works, the Peace Education Programme, Molly Scarlett and Narcotics Anonymous. Throughout the day, attendees heard about the valuable support these organisations provide and the vital role partnership working plays in helping women achieve lasting change.

The event highlighted the important function of Approved Premises, not only in supporting compliance and managing risk, but also in providing the practical and emotional support needed for women to successfully reintegrate into their communities. Support comes in many forms: a listening ear, signposting to services, peer support, opportunities to learn new skills, creative activities, and encouragement to embrace new experiences and challenges.

This year, current residents also played an important role in helping the day run smoothly, taking on a variety of responsibilities and supporting staff throughout the event. From welcoming guests and helping with refreshments to assisting with practical arrangements, their contribution was invaluable. Opportunities like these help women build confidence, develop interpersonal and organisational skills, and gain experience of taking responsibility in a supportive environment. It was wonderful to see residents stepping into these roles with such enthusiasm, professionalism and pride.

Some of the most inspiring moments of the day came from former residents who shared their personal journeys and spoke openly about the impact Ripon House staff had on their lives. We heard from one who has gone on to attend university and become a published author, and another who discovered a passion for cycling through our cycling group and now regularly participates in time trials and long-distance rides. Their stories were a powerful reminder that with the right support, encouragement and opportunities, people can achieve far more than they may once have imagined.

The Open Day was attended by a large number of partners, stakeholders, Trustees, supporters and friends of Ripon House. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of optimism, celebration and community. With the sunshine helping to showcase the house and gardens at their very best, there was plenty of laughter, conversation and shared learning.

The day not only celebrated the achievements of those who have successfully moved on from Ripon House, but also showcased the potential of our current residents, many of whom stepped outside their comfort zones to contribute to the event and demonstrate just how far they have already come.

A huge thank you goes to all of the staff who worked so hard to organise and deliver such a successful event. Their commitment, passion and belief in the people we support was evident throughout the day. We would also like to thank everyone who attended, contributed and helped make the event such a memorable occasion.

We look forward to welcoming you back next year.
